A Legacy of Protection, A Future of Possibilities

The St. Marys Riverkeeper organization was founded in 2016 under the Waterkeeper Alliance with a simple yet powerful mission: to protect and advocate for the health of the St. Marys River and its surrounding watershed. Born from the passion of local conservationists and community members who became riverkeepers, our work began with small but significant steps including raising awareness, monitoring water quality & building a coalition of dedicated advocates who believed in safeguarding this vital resource.
Over the years, we have grown tremendously. Our water quality testing programs now cover more locations, providing critical data to identify pollution sources and advocate for stronger protections. Our educational initiatives have reached schools, policymakers & the general public, inspiring people of all ages to take an active role in river conservation. And through countless clean-up events, partnerships & grassroots advocacy efforts, we have seen firsthand the power of collective action.

But there is still so much work to be done.
The St. Marys River faces ongoing challenges, from pollution threats to habitat destruction and climate impacts. Ensuring a thriving future for this waterway requires continued vigilance, collaboration and…most importantly, a passionate community willing to stand up for its protection.

A Personal Journey with the River by Malcolm Adams
“I first remember boating and skiing on the St. Marys River when I was in high school in the 1960s. The thing I remember most is the sweet smell of the very clean water and the trees and shrubs being so beautiful along the banks.
In the 1980s, I started scuba diving in the St. Marys River because it was close to home so I could get in a dive without driving two hours to a spring or chartering a boat to go offshore. The sand along the bottom is glimmering white and there are still a few giant logs here and there. And yes, it is DARK on the bottom but OK with a good light.
I wonder about all the people who have traversed the River from the Okefenokee to the ocean. Recently, my wife, Sharon, and I made a calendar, Peace Like A River, with pictures from the St. Marys River to highlight its beauty and gave it to friends and family.
When I heard a few years ago that there was a St. Marys Riverkeeper organization, I knew I wanted to join to keep the River as pristine as possible for my family and grandson who is at the tiller of my boat in the picture.
Since retirement, I spend at least one day a week on the St. Marys River, enjoying the sweet water smell & the beautiful flowers blooming each month. The river hasn’t changed much in 500 or 1000 years. Let’s keep it this great for the next 500 years.”
